Scores of black-garbed members of Jewish sects spent another evening rioting and hurling rocks in the streets of Jerusalem on Sunday. Several police officers and a protestor were injured in the melee. This time, the purported reason was to protest the legally-mandated autopsy carried out on a man who was murdered by a Palestinian worker at a hostel earlier in the day. Religious law prohibits autopsies, but in cases such as murder when the state requires that they are performed, many religious authorities permit them. The killing came after victim and attacker had argued for hours and is apparently being treated as a criminal rather than terrorist act. But for the haredim rioting in the streets, there seemed to be little difference between Saturday’s rioting over parking lots open on the Sabbath and Sunday’s autopsy controversy. An emergency medic told The Media Line that first responders and ambulances were prevented from reaching the injured. In one case, the medic told haredim blocking his approach that the protestors will bear responsibility for the death of their compatriot if the medics were not allowed to reach him in time to save his life.
Purported Cause is Different, but Haredi Riots Remain the Same
