The firing of Qassam rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip appears to be continuing without letup. On Tuesday, five more rockets landed inside Israel, one in the town of Sderot; one in Ashqelon; and three in open areas. No injuries or damage was reported. Monday saw a direct hit on what was described as a "strategic facility" in the coastal city of Ashqelon (and today’s rocket fired into Ashqelon again fell near that target). Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been committed to his policy of restraint since a truce between Israel and Palestinian factions operating in Gaza was brokered three weeks ago. But during that time more than 50 Qassams have fallen in Israel and a growing number of politicians and military officers are calling for Olmert to reassess restraint in favor of a military response. There is also resistance by army brass to Olmert’s plan to immediately remove 16 checkpoints and 27 roadblocks from Palestinian areas.
