Qatar Reportedly Pledges $100 Million per Year to Rebuild Gaza Homes

The government of Qatar has reportedly made a commitment to provide $100 million annually to re-build homes in the Gaza Strip that were destroyed during the 2014 Israeli military operation. The announcement was made by Hamas’s Gaza-based leader, Ismail Haniyyeh, during a ceremony opening a new neighborhood also funded by the Qataris. The project, known as Hamad City, will provide housing in the city of Khan Yunis to more than 1,000 Gazans who were selected through an electronic lottery. A new hospital that is also in the works will be located in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Hamas leadership is also dealing with the critical need for improved delivery of electrical power. To that end, Qatar will provide a $30 million bank guarantee so that a new line can be installed to carry electricity from the Israel Electric Company.
