Qatar wants to host the 2016 Olympic Games. The Gulf state will unveil its bid at a ceremony in Doha on Thursday night. The Media Line reported two and a half years ago that Qatar was considering a possible bid ahead of its successful hosting of the 15th Asian Games. The country lives in the shadow of nearby Dubai, which is the regional hub for foreigners. Qatar is determined to take a substantial share of that market. The country’s rulers hope winning the right to host the Olympics will put Qatar on an equal footing with Dubai. However, Dubai is also mulling an Olympic bid for the same year.
