Qatar, UAE Leaders Meet at Winter Olympics

Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on the sidelines of a lunch hosted by China’s president at the Beijing Winter Olympics. It was their first meeting since four Arab states – the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt – thawed their relations with Qatar after boycotting it starting in mid-2017. The four had objected to Doha’s close ties with Iran and Turkey and accused it of supporting Islamist terrorism. Abu Dhabi has still not restored diplomatic relations with Doha, as Riyadh and Cairo did last year. Manama has also not resumed travel or trade links with Doha, as the other three countries have.

Neither Qatar nor the UAE is participating in the Beijing Winter Olympics. Nor are Egypt or Bahrain. Saudi Arabia is making its Winter Olympics debut, with one athlete – alpine skier Fayik Abdi – representing the kingdom.
