Quartet Meets In Israel; Assigning Blair On Agenda

Representatives of the Quartet are meeting in Jerusalem on Tuesday – the first meeting since Hamas defeated Fatah and conquered the Gaza Strip. One matter to be discussed is the possible appointment of British Prime Minister Tony Blair as the Quartet’s official envoy. Blair leaves office on Wednesday. The Quartet is comprised of the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia, and is the sponsor of the Road Map peace plan. While peacemaking between Israel and the Palestinians is being discussed, efforts to create unity among the Palestinians are hanging overhead. On Monday Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak called for warring factions to put aside their differences so that a unified Palestinian front could be presented in talks with Israel.
