Israel’s Interior Minister has told four Jerusalem residents who are members of Hamas and who serve in the Palestinian government to either renounce their Hamas membership or be thrown out of Jerusalem. Roni Bar-On made the threat during a television interview. One cabinet minister and three members of the Palestinian Legislative Council who are members of Hamas live in eastern Jerusalem neighborhoods. The four men received letters from the police department on Monday telling them of the ultimatum and giving them 30 days in which to comply. The four wasted no time in rejecting Bar-On’s conditions. Observers doubt the ultimatum will stick. The men purposely ran as independents rather than as Hamas members in the Palestinian election and most believe the Israeli courts will not enforce the measure.
