Rare Bipartisan Effort Aims to End U.S. Support for Yemen War

A rare bipartisan effort will kick-off in Congress on Wednesday when Democrat Chris Murphy, Republican Mike Lee and Independent Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) introduce legislation that will end American support for the Saudi participation in the war in Yemen. The measure has a good chance of passage after an earlier attempt failed because the term ended before the House could approve it. Many lawmakers who plan to vote for the bill see it as a rebuke of the Saudis for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Those who oppose the legislation believe that as tensions with Iran continue to build unabated it’s more important to maintain a unified front against the Islamic Republic than to spar over the Saudi human rights record.
