Several Democratic members of Congress on Wednesday took the unusual step of holding a news conference to express their concern that U.S. President Barack Obama has gone too far in pressuring Israel to make harmful concessions in the peace process. Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) told reporters that the U.S. was coming close to “exerting the overwhelming pressure that we have at our disposal on our rather isolated ally," with Joseph Crowley (D-NY); and Shelley Berkeley (D-NV) looking on. For her part, Berkeley went ever further, charging that the public nature of the criticisms of Israel indicates “a decisive change of American policy” and a deviation from prior American-Israeli agreements. Pundits were quick to point out that Obama’s policies toward Israel have hitherto received very little public criticism on Capitol Hill.
