Remnant of Lebanon’s Secularization Movement Demonstrates in Beirut

Lebanese activists seeking to end sectarianism and encourage social justice returned to the streets of Beirut on Sunday albeit at a strength far below the most recent past demonstrations. The estimated 400 participants were far below the head-count in excess of 5,000 that marched in April 2010, or the 20,000 that demonstrated in March 2011, but the issues remain the same. Organizers told the Daily Star that the latest action is just the beginning and that those behind the movement know full-well that it will be a long, difficult process. The relatively small number of demonstrators was blamed on all organized political parties prohibiting their members from participating, leaving ‘independents’ to march in the streets. Participants argued that sectarianism is responsible for the state of affairs in Lebanon, and demonstrated for health care, more available electricity, affordable housing and fair wages.
