Report Details Magnitude of Syria’s Devastation

Since the onset of Syria’s civil war in March 2010, more than 220,000 people have died; more than 3.8 million have fled the country; 7.6 million are displaced within the country; and the life expectancy of a Syrian citizen has plunged from almost 80 years to 55 according to a report issued this week by the Syrian Center for Policy Research. The estimated price tag for the five years of devastation was placed at more than $200 billion, characterized in the report as the country’s “systematic collapse and destruction.” According to the report, unemployment now stands at almost 60% while a majority of Syrians cannot find food for daily sustenance. Another report issued by Physicians for Human Rights accuses the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad of being responsible for 88% of the attacks on hospitals and for virtually all of the deaths of physicians recorded since 2010.
