Report that Syria Ready to Admit Nuclear Intentions

The Associated Press is reporting that according to a confidential document it has seen, Syria is reversing its policy and will cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s investigation into Syrian construction of a secret nuclear site that could have produced nuclear weapons. The site in question was destroyed by Israeli war planes in 2007. After the attack, the IAEA tried to verify the nature of the bombed facility, but was thwarted by Syria in those attempts. The agency suggests that the about-face is an attempt to avoid action by the U.N. Security Council where the U.S. is pressing for action. The Syrian move, if true, also comes within days of an IAEA report concluding that the site Israel bombed was, indeed, a nuclear facility. The document viewed by AP is a memo from the IAEA head to his board informing them that Syrian officials informed him that “we are ready to fully cooperate with the agency.” Meanwhile, President Bashar Al-Asad continues to order his troops to shoot and kill demonstrators. On Sunday, at least 11 more Syrians died in the streets of Talbiseh and Rastan; and in villages near Homs. Rights groups report that Al-Asad’s troops used tanks and heavy machineguns in the assaults. More than 1,100 citizens have died so far and more than 10,000 have been arrested and subject to beatings and torture.
