Report: Trump to Host Camp David Peace Summit

US President Donald Trump will reportedly host an Israeli-Palestinian peace summit at Camp David some time before Israel’s September 17 elections. According to Israeli media, President Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner will invite Arab leaders to attend to confab during his six-nation trip to the Middle East, which begins Thursday in Jerusalem. Kushner, who will be joined by lead US negotiator Jason Greenblatt, is also expected to visit Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The Israeli report claimed that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his ambassador to Washington, Ron Dermer, were instrumental in planning the conference, although the former will not participate as sources say it would make it more difficult for Arab states to justify their attendance. While the Palestinians will undoubtedly decline to send representatives, that regional leaders will likely be there is being construed as an “[pre-]election gift” for Netanyahu. At Camp David, President Trump will reportedly lay out his vision for peace in broad strokes, with numerous reports claiming that he will forego speaking about the formation of a Palestinian state but, rather, of an entity with an Arab presence in the eastern part of Jerusalem, which will not serve as a capital other than for Israel.
