Senate Republicans led by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) are planning new legislation that will impose new sanctions on Iran for violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Graham, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said, “It is now time for the Congress to take Iran on directly in terms of what they’ve done outside the nuclear program.” The statement by Graham and other remarks from Capitol Hill prompted Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif to respond by chiding those who threaten, pointing to Iran’s success in developing its nuclear program despite what were threatened to be “crippling sanctions.”
