Under house arrest since February 6, Yemen’s recently-resigned President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi fled the capital city of Sana’a on Saturday after the Shiite Houthis bowed to international pressure to let him go. Members of his immediate staff were detained. Hadi arrived in the southern port city of Aden which was believed to be an intermediate stop on his way to another country, ostensibly for medical treatment. During his captivity in the presidential residence, his Information Minister Nadia Al-Sakkaf tweeted that Hadi was suffering from heart ailments and needed medical attention. Reports from Sana’a indicate the residence was looted after Hadi’s departure. The loss of Hadi is seen as a blow to America’s anti-terror campaign in Yemen, given the former president’s close cooperation and assistance in coordinating between US and Yemeni forces.
