Rigged Ambulance Kills 95 in Kabul

An explosives-filled ambulance exploded in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Saturday killing at least 95 people and wounding 158 others. For the second time in a week, the Taliban claimed responsibility for mass killings. The first incident was an attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul that left 20 dead. The Haqqani network, a terrorist group associated with the Taliban, is believed to be the ones who carried out the actual attacks in both cases. This time it was Kabul’s busy lunchtime pedestrian traffic that was the target. Eye witnesses said the ambulance detonated when it slowed down for a checkpoint and officials said they believe the nearby headquarters of the interior ministry was the most likely target. Residents of the capital were demanding to know how the ambulance managed to penetrate security which was strengthened after another mass killing last May when 150 people were killed. Both incidents are embarrassments to the Afghani government and the United States which backs it. Officials in Kabul and Washington have claimed to have forced the Taliban out of range of population centers.
