Rockets Hit Iraqi Air Base, Wounding 2
Two Iraqi soldiers were injured on Sunday after five rockets hit a military airbase north of Baghdad, which houses United States contractors as well as local Iraqi troops. While no group claimed responsibility for the attack on the Balad airbase, similar launches in the past were carried out by proxy organizations and local militias linked with Iran. Regular strikes against American targets in Iraq, including the US embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone, have been occurring for months. Two weeks ago, the same airbase attacked on Sunday was targeted by two rockets, both falling without causing damage or casualties. There are currently about 2,500 American soldiers stationed in Iraq, after the US returned in 2014 to aid the war-torn country in its battle against ISIS. Last week, Washington committed to pulling its remaining combat forces out of Iraq, though no specific timeline was set.
