Russia Frowns Upon Turkish-Israeli Rapprochement

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has complained to Israel about a reconciliation agreement that would end a five-year-ling crisis between Israel and Turkey, that followed the Mavi Marmara flotilla incident in 2010.

Russia is itself in crisis with Turkey ever since the downing of a Russian jet over Syria last November, and are displeased about some of the advantages the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan may reap from renewed ties to Israel.

Turkey accuses Russia of supporting Kurdish rebel groups that, in the context of the Syrian civil war are striking Turkish targets from Syrian territory. Last week, Erdoğan said Russian air strikes within Syrian territory may constitute war crimes.

A major concern for Moscow is the possibility that renewed ties may allow Ankara, that has nurtured close ties with the Islamist faction Hamas, a foothold in the Gaza Strip.
