Russian Sappers To Demine Palmyra

After Russian-backed troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad captured the ancient city of Palmyra from Islamic State, more than 150 Russian sappers are set to begin demining activities, Ruslan Alakhverdiyev, Deputy Chief of the Russian Armed Forces’ Engineering Troops, told the Rossiya 24 TV channel. He said they will use both in-service equipment and the equipment under development such as new protective suits, search tools and robotic devices. Islamic State caused extensive damage to Palmyra, which had archaeological finds dating back to the Neolithic period.
