As the fighting in and around Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city, intensified, aerial bombardments by the Russian air force are reported to have hit at least two hospitals and a school on Monday. Reports from the scene indicated dozens of civilians were killed or wounded. The bombing came after Russia joined other nations in working out a humanitarian halt to the fighting that is to begin in a week. Observers doubt the pause in fighting will take place, particularly because the Russian-backed regime forces appear to have the momentum and are making headway in the areas that are home to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s leading opponents. In Idlib province, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a clinic set up by Doctors without Borders was targeted and destroyed. Clearly not an accidental strike, the hospital was reportedly struck four separate times and a number of non-combatants were killed. Five people died when a children’s hospital in Aleppo province was hit by a missile. International rights groups and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon have condemned the attacks as being violations of international law, but Russia denies any complicity in striking the humanitarian targets, maintaining only military targets are being hit.
