Russia’s air force flew more than fifty sorties in Syria in a 24-hour period this weekend as President Putin presses his campaign against the Islamic State. A statement issued by the Russian defense ministry claimed to have successfully taken out a wide range of targets that include training camps for ISIS fighters, ammunition depots, fuel and military equipment. On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated that his nation is prepared to work with the Free Syrian Army, the principal group representing the rebels seeking to oust President Bashar Al-Assad, to find a political solution to the crisis. The civil war has cost more than 250,000 lives and displaced millions of Syrians. The Russian effort is also minimalizing the US-led effort which has severely reduced its activities in the theater of war since Moscow sent its forces to Syria.
