As the Trump administration prepares to unveil its long-awaited entry in the multi-generational Mideast Peace Sweepstakes, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated in his speech before the Arab Summit in Tunis on Sunday that there is no room for the United States in the peace process. Abbas declared that Washington’s support for Israel’s “racist policies,” its recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and the moving of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, as well as “taking settlements and refugees files and UNRWA from the negotiating table,” effectively ended any possible role for the United States in either offering a peace plan or mediating proposals between the parties. Abbas asked countries that have not yet recognized the state of Palestine to do so in order to “preserve the two-state solution and enhance chances for peace in the region.” The beleaguered octogenarian who is serving the 14th year of his four-year term in office, took head-on the contentious issue of PA stipends paid to families of those killed or jailed in the course of carrying out violent attacks on Israelis despite the negative impact on its struggling economy and international image. He again asked Arab nations to implement a promised economic safety net.
