Sadat Nephew says ‘Climate Not Right’ to Run for Egypt’s Presidency

The late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s nephew has called attention to the instability of the Egyptian government and the dangers that persist for opponents to the regime when he passed up a run at the presidency citing the dangers of doing so. Mohammad Anwar Al-Sadat used to be a member of parliament and has been named as a possible candidate in the March election. But he told reporters on Monday that to run would be to expose his campaign staff “from intimidation and arrest by authorities,” according to the Associated Press. Referring to the climate under President Abdel Fatteh al-Sisi, Sadat said the race would be a “lost battle,” with no “genuine competition or equal opportunities.”
