French President Nicolas Sarkozy has suspended diplomatic ties with Syria. The break follows Syria‘s alleged meddling in Lebanese affairs. Visiting Egypt, Sarkozy told reporters that, "France will sever off ties with Syria… unless we find evidence that Syria is willing to allow Lebanon choose a consensus president." France has been frustrated in its attempts to broker a deal that would end the virtual freeze in Lebanese legislative activities. A compromise candidate has been found, but no agreement has been reached regarding the sharing of power between the parties.
