Saudi Social Media Abuzz after Cleric Warns Driving Harms Ovaries

Social networks were abuzz in Saudi Arabia as citizens mocked a cleric who had warned that women driving causes harm to their ovaries and causes their children to have “clinical disorders.” Sheikh Saleh Al-Luhaydan made his comments on a local news website where he explained that, “Physiological science determined that driving automatically affects the ovaries and pushes up the pelvis.” Reporting on the backlash, the Reuters news agency quoted one Tweet as opining that the sheikh’s comments are the result of “idiocy marrying dogma,” and another remarking that “People went into space and you still ban women from driving.” Sheikh Al-Luhaydan was responding to an on-line effort to support October 26th as a day to defy the ban against women driving in Saudi Arabia. An Internet petition had attracted more than 12,000 signatures before the regime blocked access to it on Sunday.
