Predictions by world media that U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s visit to Israel would be the harbinger of a wind-up of Israeli military operations in Lebanon have proven to be wrong. At least publicly. What was discussed, according to Israeli and American sources, was Israeli cooperation in the establishment of a "humanitarian corridor" to allow shipments of necessities to reach the Lebanese people and the possibility of assembling an international force of peacekeepers to separate Israel and the Hizbullah. Israel announced that until that happens, it will occupy a strip of land between Lebanon and Israel to force Hizbullah missiles out of range of Israeli communities. Rice left Israel and flew to Rome where she will join her colleagues from other nations in discussions of the crisis in Lebanon and address possible action by the international community.
