SecState Returns to Doha after Qatari Deal Falls Flat in Riyadh

United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is back in Doha after failing to generate any excitement with the Saudis and its partners over his memorandum of understanding with Qatar. In an obvious attempt to cleanse the Qataris of the charge leveled at them by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt that it is a major funder of terror – although the Qatari foreign minister actually said the MOU is unrelated to the sanctions – Tillerson brokered an MOU reciting a series of steps Doha would take to cut-off funding for terror and presented it to representatives of the four nations in Jeddah on Wednesday to what appears to be barely a reaction at all: a mere dismissal that it’s “not enough.” On Thursday, Tillerson was back in Doha, apparently to see whether the Qataris are willing to go further in satisfying the 13-point list of Saudi-led demands. The US has close relationships with both the Qataris and the four nations that instigated the isolation of Qatar. Relations were cut, Qatari nationals expelled and all air, land and sea contacts were halted by the four nations.
