Shootings in Jordan Leave Ten Dead including Canadian Tourist

At least ten people were killed on Sunday when gunmen opened fire in several locations in and near the Jordanian town of Karak. Officials have not indicated who was behind the attacks and no group has taken responsibility. A Canadian woman who was visiting Jordan was shot dead along with two other civilians and seven Jordanian police officers at Karak Castle, a Crusader ruin dating back to 1142 that is a popular tourist attraction. It was the third location attacked by gunmen who began by firing on police arriving with other responders to a call reporting a house fire. The gunmen escaped and a security patrol was later fired upon with no injuries reported. The Karak Castle shootings followed, after which it was reported that at least five gunmen were holed up in the castle with hostages. Police later said the siege was over and that four “terrorist outlaws” were flushed out of the castle and killed, but there has been no indication of who the gunmen were or what group they represent. The number of injuries was 29, with some described as serious. Officials said a raid on their hideout yielded weapons and explosives, including suicide belts.
