The report attributes the surge in exports to the expanded production from Israel’s largest natural gas field, Leviathan, located about 120 km off Israel’s northern shores in the Mediterranean Sea. In response to the growing demand from Egypt, a 46 km underwater gas pipeline is being constructed off Israel’s southern coast, along with other supply infrastructures near the Egyptian border in the southern Negev desert.
In tandem with the increased gas production from the nearby Tamar field, Israel’s domestic consumption rose by 3% in 2022, hitting 12.71 BCM, predominantly utilized by the electricity sector.
