The New York Times is reporting the slaughter of more than 100 protesters in the Iranian city of Mahshahr on November 18 by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The victims had been hiding in a marsh from the Guard after demonstrating against the high energy prices imposed by the Rouhani government in the port city. According to the Times, the guard opened up on the weapon-less protesters with machine guns. Faced with a crumbling economy brought on in large part by the American economic sanctions, the Iranian government sought to come up with additional revenue through vastly increased energy prices — 200% on gasoline. The drastic nature of the fees drove demonstrators into the streets where violent clashes with the Revolutionary Guard have been frequent.
