Some Coronavirus Restrictions Removed in Israel on Sunday; Owners Demand Compensation

Israel is betting that it has the upper hand in the struggle to eliminate COVID-19. So much so, that despite warnings of an impending second outbreak if the guard comes down too soon, as of Sunday morning hair salons will be allowed to reopen their doors along with street-level stores and shops in Israeli cities. It was decided that large malls would not be included in the first round of reopenings and a number of health-related rules would remain in effect. Distance will be maintained between clerk and customer, for instance, and shoppers will see signs stating the number of customers allowed inside the store at one time. Gatherings outside of the store will also not be allowed. The most significant health-related requirement will be the taking of each customer’s temperature. Failure to comply will be met with large fines and the possibility of six months in jail. A fine of 200 shekels (about $57) awaits Israelis caught with their masks down. By midday, it was clear that many stores opted to remain closed: some due to the ongoing pandemic and others, including major chains, to underscore their demand that the government reimburse them for losses while the shopping ban was in effect.
