“Sully” Writer will do Film on 2003 Terrorist Bombing at Mike’s Place in Tel Aviv

Screenwriter Tom Komarnicki, who won acclaim with “Sully,” and “Olympus Has Fallen” producer Antoine Fuqua have picked up the option to do a film based on the 2003 terrorist attack on the Tel Aviv beachfront pub, Mike’s Place, according to industry bible Variety. The basis for the project is Jack Baxter’s autobiographical “Blues on the Beach” (2004) and his 2015 graphic novel, “Mike’s Place: A True Story of Love, Blues and Terror in Tel Aviv.” Baxter was in Mike’s Place filming life under the threat of terror that day in 2003 when two terrorists carrying British passports entered the pub and triggered their explosive packs. Only one of the two loads detonated, but the one that did resulted in three deaths and fifty injuries. Baxter himself, who was severely wounded, remained comatose for days and only learned later on that bartender Josh Faudem picked up his camera and continued to film the horror and chaos that unfolded inside the bar. Baxter and Faudem presented their experiences to Israeli and Palestinian journalists at a session of The Media Line’s Mideast Press Club, and The Media Line more recently held a town hall meeting about terror since the Intifada as part of the filming of the sequel to “Blues,” “The Last Sermon.” Fuqua and Komarnicki also tied up Baxter’s life story for the project.
