Syrian Army Assaults Damascus; Helicopter Shot Down

Damascus again became the focal point of fighting between the Syrian army and opposition forces on Monday, the day’s events including the downing of a regime helicopter and lethal rocket fire that killed more than sixty in and around the city. For the past several weeks, Aleppo, the nation’s largest city, took the brunt of the fighting. But on Monday, attention returned to the capital. Of 62 reported killed, some appeared to have been shot and killed execution-style, which has been common lately. President Al-Assad’s troops were accused of murdering more than 300 in Dera’a this week, a massacre UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called “an appalling and brutal crime.” Rebel forces claimed to have shot down a government helicopter which a video showed crashing.
