Israel’s army chief-of-staff is in the United States to discuss the purported end to the Syrian civil war and its repercussions with his American counterpart. The final Syrian army onslaught against anti-regime rebels has prompted Israel to provide life-saving assistance to a number of wounded Syrians and to deliver some 60-tons of humanitarian aid this weekend alone to the thousands of Syrians fleeing from their homes. It’s not known what effect the acceptance of government rule by the rebels will have on the humanitarian situation on the ground. Refugees from Daraa have encamped along the border with Jordan, a short distance from the Israeli border. Israeli security officials have underscored that the large quantities of food, medicine and necessities should not be mistaken for a ticket to enter the Jewish state. As many as 120,000 Syrians are estimated to be on the move having left their homes. Camps that were set up over the weekend were reported to be needing just about everything. The 300 tents, 15 tons of food and 15 tons of baby formula is believed to be a drop in the bucket since the humanitarian aid is the first to arrive. The rebel forces from the Free Syrian Army had sent messages to President Assad’s commanders in the field offering to surrender their arms if they are allowed to remain in their homes. This, after tens of thousands have already fled. The area where the refugees are camping abuts Jordan and Israel, neither of which will allow them to enter. There is much debate in Israel about whether the masses on the border and the destabilizing in the area could trigger a major clash between the Israelis and Syrians. Most believe all parties are sufficiently aware to prevent an accidental conflagration.
