More than 150 fighters – at least 120 of them belonging to the Islamic State – were killed in fierce fighting in a 24-hour period in the eastern Hama area of Syria over the weekend. The battles were monitored and reported by The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The town of Uqayribat, where the fighting was centered, is the final hold-out for the ISIS forces in the central province. Over the weekend, the town changed hands from government control to ISIS and then, after fierce pounding by Syrian and Russian fighter planes, the government appeared to regain final control. The civil war has been raging since 2011 and during that time has claimed more than 320,000 lives and displaced millions of Syrians.
