Syrian Truce is Extended for another 48-Hours

The ceasefire between troops loyal to the Syrian regime and rebel forces it opposes that was brokered by Russia and the United States is being extended for an additional 48-hours. US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by phone of Wednesday and decided that despite some sporadic violence, on the whole the truce that went into effect on Monday was holding well enough to warrant two more days. If the timeout can hold for a week, the second stage of the Kerry-Lavrov plan will kick-in: joint decisions by the two super-powers regarding the fight against ISIS and Jabat Fatah Al-Sham – formerly the Al-Nusra Front. According to the Russians, most of the fighting during the ceasefire came from groups that had not accepted the provisions of the truce. In the Aleppo area, the effort to neutralize the Costello Road supply route has been agreed upon, but the rebels say that while they are prepared to pull back, it won’t happen while government forces remain on the road. Also on the negative side is word that trucks bringing humanitarian supplies to besieged Syrians have not yet moved and will not until it’s deemed safe for the drivers and crews to venture forth.
