Tehran Police Chief: Easing Up on Religious Violations

Tehran’s chief of police said on Wednesday that his officers are lightening up on people who fail to observe religious rules. The French news agency AFP is reporting that Brig. Gen. Hossein Rahimi said in a speech on Wednesday that those who do not observe Islamic codes will no longer be taken into custody, placed in detention centers and have judicial files opened on them. The Islamic Republic, it seems, has gone progressive, seeking to educate rather than punish. Rahimi said more than 100 counseling centers have been opened in Tehran province alone and that almost 8,000 offenders have already taken the courses the centers offer. According to AFP, the last police chief was credited with making some 40,000 arrests for “bad hijab” cases alone. That’s where “un-Islamic dress” is involved. The example given: when a woman’s hijab (head covering) slips and falls around her neck.
