Tel Aviv Rally, Ostensibly for Two-State Solution, Showcases Palestinian Authority President

Israel’s opposition and politically left-wing organizations staged a mass rally in support of a two-state solution on Saturday night, drawing a crowd estimated at 15,000 people. The event was the most significant mass opportunity for the public to reject the policies of the Netanyahu government in recent memory. Ironically, co-host of the demonstration, head of opposition Isaac Herzog, ascended to the podium to a cacophony of boos. The focus on the two-state solution comes as a growing number of Israelis on the political right are eschewing the plan in favor of a one-state alternative. American President Donald Trump touched off a brouhaha when he said he favors any plan the parties themselves agree to. In a reaction many find bizarre, Trump was harshly criticized for deviating from the two-state mantra rather than applauded for supporting the will of the parties – especially since all American presidents have reiterated time and again that ultimately, it’s the parties themselves who must decide the content of any agreement. Some Israelis we spoke to were critical of the rally’s organizers for featuring a message from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as the demonstration’s center-piece, arguing that the statement read implied that progress is being held up solely because of the Israeli leadership’s rejection of the two-state solution. The rally came one day after Channel 2 television released its latest poll – the first conducted since the Trump visit. Incumbent Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu showed a dramatic increase in the projected number of parliamentary seats his Likud Party would win, up by 8 to 30. The second-place party headed by former television personality Yair Lapid showed at 22 seats while Herzog plummeted to 12 seats (15 if Herzog is replaced by former PM Ehud Barak). But in the important category of who is most fit to lead the nation, Netanyahu outdistanced his nearest opposition by double digits.
