Israel removed metal detectors from the entrances to the complex in Jerusalem’s Old City, set up following a July 14 attack in which three Arab-Israelis killed two Israeli Druze police officers using weapons that had been smuggled into the holy site. The installation of the magnometers sparked widespread protests, with Muslim leaders accusing Israel of attempting to assert sovereignty over the Temple Mount. As an alternative, Israel is now expected to use high-resolution cameras, placed outside the gates to al-Aqsa, capable of detecting hidden objects. However, the Waqf—the Islamic Trust which administers the Temple Mount (known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif) under Jordanian custodianship—continues to call on worshippers to boycott the location until it completes a review of the new security measures. Meanwhile, a poll by Israel’s Channel 2 showed that 77 percent of Israelis believe that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu capitulated in the face of Muslim protests. It is a potential blow to Netanyahu, who prides himself on being “Mr. Security.”
