Tens of Thousands March Against Al-Asad; Iran Admonishes Syrian Leader

Syrian President Bashar Al-Asad absorbed a double-hit on Saturday when tens of thousands took to the streets demanding his resignation despite the dangers; and Iran admonished that he must “respond to the legitimate demands of the people.” In the cities of Qusair and Latakia, government troops used live ammunition against demonstrators leaving mosques where they were celebrating a Muslim observance. A Syrian human rights group reported that Al-Asad’s security forces attacked worshipers at a Damascus mosque as well, wounding some with gunfire. The rights group also reported government forces firing on a funeral procession on Saturday. The Arab League on Saturday again called upon Al-Asad to “resort to reason” and decided to send its secretary general to Damascus to push for economic and political reforms.
