Tense Calm Restored after Major Flare-up along Israel-Lebanon Border

Violence erupted along the volatile Israel-Lebanon border on Sunday, with Hizbullah firing anti-tank missiles at Israeli military positions located near the village of Avivim. In response, the IDF fired some 100 mortar rounds into southern Lebanon and struck Hizbullah assets by air. Earlier in the day, Israel reportedly fired dozens of flares into Lebanon in an apparent effort to prevent the attack. “We are consulting about the future, are prepared for any scenario and will decide on [further] actions depending on the developments,” Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said as a tense calm was restored along the border. Many are attributing the containment to an Israeli false-flag operation, in which the IDF used a helicopter to transport soldiers wearing bandages and covered with fake blood to a nearby medical center moments after the anti-tank missiles struck. This prompted Hizbullah to boast that its attack had succeeded in harming “the enemy,” perhaps preventing additional hostilities. The conflagration came a day after Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed to avenge an alleged Israeli drone strike late last month in Beirut. That, in turn, followed a major IDF operation in Syria to thwart an Iranian plot to target northern Israeli communities with “killer drones.”
