Tension in Gaza Eases with Arrival of Fuel from Qatar

Tension in the Gaza Strip that was so intense it drove residents to dare public protests in the streets in a rare rebuke of their Hamas rulers has subsided upon word that fuel has arrived from Qatar. The protests were not without cost as Hamas operatives exacted a toll on the protesters. It was the lack of fuel to operate the power station that produces electricity that had fueled the unrest. Because of delinquencies in paying the primary supplier of electricity – the Israeli Electric Company – the millions of dollars owed, electricity was available to Gazans for less than four hours each day. Marches and rallies chiding Hamas have been rare since the terrorist organization wrested the Gaza Strip from Fatah – Palestinian Authority control in 2007. But true to form, the response was large numbers of arrests and orders to appear before authorities according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights. It’s not known to what extent the arrival of fuel from Qatar will alleviate the situation, but an additional shipment – from Turkey – is also expected. Officials announced that schedules for electricity availability will now return to normal.
