Tension High in Jerusalem after Shootings

After months of relative quiet in the Jerusalem area, the city’s police and other security forces in its environs are on high alert after two shooting incidents overnight to the north and south of the Israeli capital. Two gunmen opened fire at a border police position at the entrance to Shuafat, the only Palestinian refugee camp under Israeli control. One officer was killed and a second wounded, with the gunmen making off with their weapons, according to eyewitnesses and officials. To Jerusalem’s south, in the Gush Etzion region of the West Bank, two Palestinians entered a religious Jewish college and managed to stab three Israelis before they were killed by program leaders at the college. Meanwhile, the police force in Jerusalem has restricted entry to Muslim prayers on Friday on the Temple Mount. While all women are permitted to enter the compound, only men over 40 are granted access. That decision was taken after protests were feared in support of the Palestinians in Gaza.
