The Media Line Holds Inaugural Press & Policy Breakfast

U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman extended greetings at the inaugural Press & Policy Breakfast of The Media Line, the American news agency, in which he challenged journalists to increase the accuracy of their reporting which he intimated was lacking in their coverage of the recent mass violence along the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip. The event also featured two panels, the first including Israeli Minister for Regional Cooperation Tzachi Hanegbi; Israeli Deputy Parliament Speaker Hilik Bar; Egyptian-born doctoral candidate at Tel Aviv University Haisam Hassanein; and Dr. Ayad Dajani, a Palestinian who grew up in east Jerusalem currently working at the Germany-based Jena Center for Reconciliation Studies. Of the many issues discussed is the manner in which the press has contributed to shaping the contours of public discourse related to the Israeli-Arab conflict and what can be done to combat against negative impressions with a view to fostering co-existence. The second panel, focusing on the growing influence of women on the formulation of policy, consisted of Israeli parliamentarian Sharren Haskel; Gadeer Mreeh, Israel’s first-ever female Druze television news anchor; and Talia Medina, Executive Assistant to the Vice President of CBS News. The talk centered on the obstacles women face in largely male-dominated workplaces and the qualities, both inherent and learned, which can be employed to overcome them. The dominant theme throughout the event was the importance of accurate, truthful fact-based news coverage and its impact on the creation of sound public policy.
