Participants at The Media Line’s inaugural Press-and-Policy Breakfast on Monday came away with more than a nutritious start to the day and another comment by American Ambassador to Israel David M. Friedman for news organizations to craft stories around. More than 150 attendees shared in thoughtful discussions about the impact of news reporting and women on the creation of policy. Although multiple news organizations focused almost exclusively on a comment Friedman made in the course of extending greetings of the US at the American news organization’s milestone event [he urged newsies to “get it right” rather than getting it fast” and not to speak until they get it right], emerging pressures from the street fueled by social media that are creating new stresses and new realities for policy makers were the primary topics of the day. Those directly involved in policy who contributed included Israel’s Minister for Regional Cooperation Tzachi Hanegbi; secretary general of the Labor Party and deputy speaker of parliament Hilik Bar; parliamentarian Sharren Haskel, only 34 and one of the rising legislative stars; Druze broadcaster Gadeer Mreeh; former TML intern Talia Medina (now assistant to CBS News vice president); Haisam Hassanein, an Egyptian PhD student studying in Israel; and Palestinian reconciliation expert Dr. Iyad Dajani; all overseen by The Media Line’s Felice Friedson. TML’s Press-and-Policy Student Program partners the agency with leading universities to provide students with hands-on journalism mentoring in the region or via remote study.
