Israeli security officials say 6 1/2 tons of potassium nitrate – a chemical used in the manufacture of explosives – was discovered in a truck in bags marked as sugar from the European Union. The truck was bound for the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Hamas. The seizure was made several weeks ago, but just reported by the Israelis. An official of the E.U., which is the largest provider of aid to the Palestinians, responded to the report of the find, saying if true, it’s illegal and should be condemned.
