Tourists Hesitant to Return to Israel’s Northern Border

Innkeepers and hoteliers in the north of Israel report a disappointing Jewish holiday season near the Lebanese border in the aftermath of the recent war between Israel and the Hizbullah. Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, is a two-day holiday during which secular Jews normally flock to the north to enjoy the summer-like weather in a vacation atmosphere, rather than spending the days in a synagogue. Accordingly, guesthouses and rooms available throughout the north – all the way to the border – are at a premium. But this year, occupancy was as low as 50-70% in northernmost areas. According to tourism officials, occupancy rates increased proportionately to the distance from the Lebanese border. The Jewish National Fund, which operates national parks throughout the country, reported normal crowds in parks and nature reserves. Tourists hiking in the north had a new interest this year: looking for pieces of Katyusha rockets.
