Tourists Injured in Blast near Egypt’s Pyramids

A May 19 explosion targeting a tourist bus near the Grand Egyptian Museum, close to the Giza pyramids, injured at least 17 people, most of them foreigners from South Africa. It came after a roadside bomb in December killed three Vietnamese tourists and an Egyptian guide in the same area. Cairo has for years been engaged in a military campaign in the Sinai Peninsula against an Islamic State-affiliated group that has perpetrated dozens of attacks in the largely lawless territory, as well as in the capital and other major Egyptian cities. Most notably, the so-called Sinai Province group claimed responsibility for a November 2017 attack on al-Rawda mosque that killed over 300 people. The latest incident comes days after Egypt’s military released a rare statement that its forces had killed 47 Islamists during recent operations.
