Trump Implements New Travel Restrictions to Replace Expiring Ban

A new series of travel restrictions on residents of certain predominantly Muslim countries will begin on October 18 as the controversial 90-day ban on seven Islamic nations expires. The strongest restriction is for Syrians, whose ban on traveling to the United States will remain indefinitely. Sudan is alone among the targeted nations in its exclusion from the new regulations altogether. For residents of Somalia, Yemen, Chad, Iran, Libya and North Korea, the restrictions include a ban on immigrant visas and other measures ranging from the lifting of other terms of the ban to its application to only certain individuals and government officials. Valid visas are not being revoked this time around as part of the White House’s attempts to prevent the overwhelming public blowback that accompanied the original executive order implementing the travel ban for residents of seven predominantly Muslim countries. The Trump administration went as far as giving notice to every nation in the world and allowed more than a month during which comments and concerns could be heard.
