Trump Pounded by Pleas to Forego Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital

Two days before US President Donald Trump is delivers a speech that has the potential to be one of the most important in US-Israel history, massive pressure from Palestinian leadership and key voices from throughout the Arab world is being exerted in an effort to prevent what many believe will be a declaration of recognition of Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem. Typical of the pleas received in the White House and State Department is Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi’s entreaty, saying that, “The results of such a decision will be seen in the form of great anger throughout the Arab and Muslim world, further tension and destruction of efforts to establish peace.” The decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, if it happens, is in part intended to take attention from the issue of moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem – a campaign vow that never saw the light of day. According to a 1995 law, the president must certify every six months that moving the embassy to Jerusalem is against national security or, absent signing the waiver, the move must take place. The belief is that President Trump will have it both ways: recognize sovereignty by not move the embassy.
